Monterey Valley WIP
This is a sneak peak at the next installment of Monterey Valley. I think I'm going to try releasing more Monterey Valley WIPs on Pateron early for higher tiers in the future.

August 21, 2024 - Getting back into reading. When I was pretending to go to college (East Los Angeles College, 1969-1971), I read a lot. I had met some people in the English Department and there was a level of peer pressure to read the counter culture classics... Kerouac, Hesse, Brautigan, Huxley, Burroughs, Orwell, Heinlen, etc. I thought a lot of it was terrible (some of it I enjoyed), but I also thought maybe my 19 year old mind just couldn't understand the message. I have re-read some of it and some of it was just hippie bullshit.
Secretly, I was reading a lot of Steinbeck. I brought it up once and felt a bit of "looking down of the nose" and I felt maybe the books I enjoyed were too basic. I've spent a lot of time in the California Central Coast over the years. Starting in 1972, there was an annual trip to Laguna Seca Raceway to participate in the professional motorcycle race held there. Trips up Highway 101 to San Francisco to visit friends. Motorcycle rides alone and with friends up and down Highway 1. Monterey became and still is one of my favorite places and my daughter attended college at California State University Monterey Bay.
Getting back into some Steinbeck is like comfort food for me. Familiar places, familiar personalities, just the basic vibe of California from the window of my van or through the lens of my motorcycle helmet. There's a nice warm golden glow to both the California Central Coast and more so moving through the Central Valley. I get that from Steinbeck.

20 people in Monterey Park, California shot allegedly by Asian man
A gunman opened fire at a ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park, Los Angeles County, California, United States on the evening of January 21, 2023. Less than 10 minutes later, the same gunman walked in with a firearm at a ballroom in Alhambra, San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles County.

Where In The World Is California?
Tumblr media
In 1927, Paramount Studios had this funny map, detailing which parts of California could substitute for which global locations. It was too expensive to fly around the world to film their movies. So they made California into the world.

The Little Mistakes That Make It Past Editing
So I'm sitting here reading back through my very first episode of Monterey Valley, Midnight Heartbreak, and realizing I made a bit of a silly mistake. I'll probably keep it in, explain it away like Sandra was in no state of mind to realize she'd turned it on but... Well here (mildly nsfw):
I took a step into the cool night air, tasting the salt on the wind as it gusted. My overcoat flutter in the breeze, blowing open in the humid air. It washed over my exposed skin, sending an electric shock down my spine and out my limbs. I shivered, my nipples tightening as goose pimples rose across my flesh. I hastened to pull the front of my coat closed and kept walking. It wasn’t that it was cold, the summer weather was actually warmer than usual, but my car had been blasting full throttle heat through the vents for the last thirty minutes. The thermal shock was aggressive.
Why would I have written that she had the heat blasting full though the vents if it's a warm summer night? Last time I took a summer drive at night, I put the windows down and was still plenty warm. Hmm... I don't like it but whatever, I've got too much to work on without going back to rewrite posts from three years ago.

So what are some ways y'all use to determine if someone is actually from your state or not?
For me, the easiest way to determine if someone is actually from California or not is by finding out whether they think the San Francisco Bay Area, and more specifically the South Bay — what most non-Californians know as "Silicon Valley" 🤢 — is NorCal or SoCal
Oh and whether or not they know that "Silicon Valley" is part of the San Francisco Bay Area but does not include San Francisco (or Oakland) is another reliable way to determine who's from here and who isn't
